Panasonic GX8 vs Fuji X-Pro2 — part 1

Just out of curiosity, I decided to take some real world shots this afternoon comparing the GX8 and the Fuji X-Pro2. I put both into their standard mode (Provia on Fuji), used comparable lenses, used the same white balance preset (cloudy), ISO 200, and same shutter speed. The results are below (see captions for photo details).

GX8 — Out of camera JPG. Leica 42.5mm f/1.2 @ f/2. ISO 200, 1/125, cloudy white balance, face detect autofocus.

X-Pro2 — Out of camera JPG. Fuji 56.5mm f/1.2 @ f/2. ISO 200, 1/125, cloudy white balance, face detect autofocus.

Personally, I prefer the Fuji rendering. Now I realize that the bokeh isn’t the same due to different lenses and focal lengths, but both cameras are quite good.

The second thing I wanted to compare was the EVF. I displayed some images in each camera and took a photo with my iPhone. I didn’t crop the photos because I wanted to illustrate the difference in the size of the image.

Without a doubt, the EVF on the GX8 is clearly superior to the X-Pro2, but the above photos really illustrate the difference.

I’ll be using both systems for now. The Panasonic / Leica lens lineup and performance are quick, easy to shoot with, and great for family outings when you want no hassles. For a more pleasing rendering, better bokeh, and more deliberate shooting, I’ll use the Fuji. Canon is still what I use for serious shooting, but the Fuji will probably get used the most.
